New Delhi: Dark Chocolate May Slow Aging: From children to adults, everyone loves to eat chocolate, and many people are especially fond of dark chocolate. While it's generally better for health to consume less sugar, dark chocolate is a favorite among many, especially women. It's even said that eating dark chocolate doesn't harm weight loss efforts, and many people consume it as a mood booster.

You've probably heard that eating chocolate can damage your teeth, but a new study has revealed a surprising fact about dark chocolate. Dark chocolate has always been considered healthier than regular chocolate, but now new research has highlighted that the natural compounds present in dark chocolate may help slow down the aging process in our bodies.

What did the study find?
A recent study from King's College London claims that a natural compound found in cocoa may help maintain the health of cells as we age. However, this doesn't mean that dark chocolate is a magical anti-aging food. But this research suggests that certain chemicals found in plants can help our bodies age in a healthier way.

This research was conducted by a team at King's College London, titled "Key Chemical in Dark Chocolate May Slow Down the Aging Process." The study focused on the component epicatechin, a type of flavanol found in cocoa and several other plants.

How does epicatechin work?
Researchers observed that epicatechin directly affects the inner lining of our blood vessels. As we age, this lining weakens, affecting blood flow, heart health, and energy levels. The study observed these effects of epicatechin:

  • Improved relaxation of blood vessels, leading to better blood flow
  • Improved nitric oxide (NO) levels, which decrease with age
  • Improved endothelial function, making blood vessels function more like those of younger individuals
  • The scientists used controlled and purified epicatechin. This means they didn't feed participants chocolate, but rather used the actual epicatechin chemical.

Should you eat more dark chocolate?
While the study found that consuming dark chocolate may slow down the aging process, this doesn't mean you should eat it in large quantities. Dark chocolate does contain epicatechin, but it also contains sugar, high calories, and saturated fat. Therefore, eating it in large amounts every day is not advisable. Instead of relying solely on chocolate, incorporate plant-based foods containing flavanols into your diet.

What foods contain flavanols?

  • Berries
  • Apples
  • Tea
  • Grapes

What can epicatechin do?
Poor blood circulation is considered a major cause of aging. When blood flow is weak, it affects the brain, heart, skin, and the entire body. In such cases, flavanols like epicatechin can help alleviate several health problems.

  • Reducing inflammation
  • Improving blood flow
  • Reducing oxidative stress
  • Improving heart and metabolic health
