New Delhi: Do you often feel unusually tired, sleepy, or low on energy during the summer months? If yes, you are certainly not alone. Many people complain that even after a full night’s sleep, they wake up feeling exhausted, heavy-headed, and unable to concentrate properly.

The constant urge to rest, reduced productivity, and lack of motivation become common during extreme heat conditions.

While most people blame it simply on “summer weather,” experts say there are several scientific and physiological reasons behind this seasonal drop in energy levels.

According to Doctor, the human body undergoes significant stress during hot weather, which can leave people feeling weak and fatigued throughout the day.

How the Body Responds to Heat

During summer, the body works continuously to regulate its internal temperature. To cool itself down, blood vessels near the skin expand and sweating increases. Although this natural cooling mechanism is essential, it also consumes a large amount of energy. As a result, even simple day-to-day activities can leave a person feeling unusually drained and tired.

Dehydration Plays a Major Role

One of the biggest reasons behind summer fatigue is dehydration. Excessive sweating causes the body to lose not only water but also important electrolytes such as sodium and potassium. When the body lacks proper hydration, symptoms like weakness, dizziness, headaches, muscle cramps, and poor concentration begin to appear.

Experts warn that many people fail to realise they are dehydrated until the symptoms become severe. Even mild dehydration can significantly impact both physical stamina and mental alertness.

Poor Sleep and Unhealthy Summer Habits

Summer heat does not only affect the daytime. Hot and humid nights often disturb sleep quality, making it harder for the body to recover properly. Lack of restful sleep can trigger irritability, low energy, fatigue, and daytime sleepiness.

In addition, many people increase their intake of tea, coffee, sugary soft drinks, and packaged juices during summer in an attempt to feel refreshed. However, these beverages can sometimes worsen dehydration and cause temporary spikes and crashes in energy levels.

Who Needs to Be Extra Careful?

Dr. Sharma says certain groups are more vulnerable to summer-related exhaustion and health complications. These include elderly individuals, children, outdoor workers exposed to direct sunlight, and patients suffering from diabetes or heart disease. People taking blood pressure medicines or diuretics should also remain cautious, as these medications may increase the risk of dehydration during extreme heat.
