Lucknow: The Congress is preparing a fresh strategy for the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections as discussions over seat-sharing with the Samajwadi Party intensify. The party is reportedly looking to field candidates who have strong public influence, organisational strength and the ability to manage election campaigns effectively.

A senior Congress leader said the party wants to contest the upcoming UP polls with a serious approach and will give preference to candidates who have both political credibility and adequate resources.

However, the party is also expected to consider candidates from ordinary backgrounds if they have a strong chance of winning in their constituencies.

Congress Seeks Bigger Share In SP Alliance

The seat-sharing formula between the Congress and Samajwadi Party has already become a key issue ahead of the 2027 elections. Congress leaders believe their performance in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections has strengthened their position and are demanding a larger role in the alliance.

The party is reportedly pushing for a bigger share of the 403 Assembly seats and does not want to settle for a limited number of constituencies.

Congress leaders have argued that the party has regained support among sections of Dalits, minorities and non-Yadav OBC voters, especially around issues of social justice and constitutional rights.

Lessons From Previous UP Election Performance

The Congress strategy is also influenced by its disappointing performance in the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. Despite contesting hundreds of seats, the party managed to win only a few constituencies.

Party insiders claim that some candidates who received campaign support failed to use resources effectively, prompting a rethink in candidate selection.

The party has started organisational preparations across Uttar Pradesh through grassroots programmes and constituency-level planning.

Congress leaders believe that anti-incumbency against the BJP government and the party’s improved performance in recent elections could create opportunities in the state.
