New Delhi: News of encounters is nothing new for Indians. We regularly read about encounters in Uttar Pradesh and other states. Many major encounters have taken place in the country.
However, yesterday, one of the largest encounters in history took place, in which at least 64 criminals were killed by the police.
following this, some police personnel also lost their lives in this operation. This incident took place thousands of miles away, not in our country.
In fact, at least 64 people were killed in the largest police operation ever conducted against organized crime in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Tuesday.
According to a media report, security officials said four Brazilian police officers were among the dead.
The operations were concentrated in the northern areas of the city, particularly the Alemao and Penha Complex favela areas, where the criminal organization known as Commando Vermelho (Red Command) holds sway.
Rio de Janeiro Governor Claudio Castro stated in a press conference that police seized a large quantity of drugs during the operation.
Officials claimed on social media that at least 42 rifles were also recovered. In a post on X on Tuesday afternoon, Castro described the operation as the largest in Rio de Janeiro's history. The state government stated in a lengthy thread on X that the operation had been in preparation for more than a year to counter the territorial expansion of the Commando Vermelho, involving more than 2,500 military and civilian police officers.
The Commando Vermelho is Brazil's oldest active criminal organization, inspired by the Red Command, an organization of leftist prisoners formed in prisons during the military dictatorship that lasted until 1985.
According to the Insight Crime think tank, the organization has now become a vast transnational criminal network involved in drug trafficking and extortion. In recent years, it has been grappling with increasing violence from state actions and other criminal militias.
The situation during the operation remained extremely tense. Video released by Reuters showed huge columns of black smoke rising from the Alemao favela. Later photos showed the smoke coming from burned vehicles that gangs had used as barricades.
The Rio de Janeiro Police Department posted on social media that at least 81 people were arrested on Tuesday. Authorities claim gangs used drones to retaliate. The state government shared a video on X, saying that criminals attacked police officers in the Penha complex with drones in retaliation.
