New Delhi: India's ambitious e-Courts project is now attracting international attention. Britain has shown special interest in this project, and a British delegation will arrive in New Delhi on November 6th. This team will meet with senior officials of the Union Law Ministry and members of the Supreme Court's e-Committee.

What is the e-Courts Project?
The e-Courts Project aims to completely digitize the country's courts. Under this project, case filing, record management, hearings, orders, and judgments are all being made available online. This project is currently in its third phase.

  • Highlights of Phase 3
  • Digitization of 3,108 crore documents
  • Cloud technology-based court system
  • Provision of 25 petabytes of digital storage - (costing ₹1,205.20 crore)
  • Establishment of 1,150 virtual courts - (costing ₹413.08 crore)
  • Courts, prisons, police, and forensic labs will be connected to the ICJS system
  • This phase has received approval from the Union Cabinet in September 2023.

Why is the need for e-courts increasing?

Given the large backlog of cases in Indian courts, a digital system is considered the need of the hour. The e-courts project will digitally secure court records, reduce paper use, and ensure an environmentally friendly process. Virtual hearings will save time and travel costs. Online payment of court fees and fines will be available, making the judicial process transparent and faster.

India-UK Cooperation Expected
The UK delegation's visit is seen as an opportunity to enhance technological cooperation in the judicial sector. It is hoped that both countries will be able to share experiences in digital reforms in the judicial system and may also work on joint projects in the future.
