Three US lawmakers bring resolution to end Trump's 50 per cent tariffs on India
Washington: Three members of the US House of Representatives have introduced a resolution aimed at ending President Donald Trump’s national emergency declaration that imposed tariffs of up to 50 per cent on imports from India. Lawmakers described the duties as “illegal and harmful” to American workers, consumers, and the broader US-India relationship.
The resolution, spearheaded by Representatives Deborah Ross, Marc Veasey, and Raja Krishnamoorthi, comes in the wake of a bipartisan Senate effort to terminate similar tariffs on Brazil and to restrict presidential powers to unilaterally raise import duties.

The resolution seeks to reverse the additional 25 per cent secondary duties imposed on Indian goods on August 27, 2025, which were layered on top of prior reciprocal tariffs. Combined, these measures have pushed duties on numerous Indian products to 50 per cent under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA).
Congresswoman Ross highlighted the economic impact, noting that North Carolina benefits greatly from trade and investment with India. “Indian companies have invested over a billion dollars in the state, creating thousands of jobs in life sciences and technology sectors, while North Carolina manufacturers export hundreds of millions in goods to India each year,” she said.
Congressman Veasey emphasized the broader effects on American citizens, calling the tariffs “a tax on everyday North Texans already struggling with rising costs.”
Congressman Krishnamoorthi, who is of Indian descent, added that the duties disrupt supply chains, hurt American workers, and increase costs for consumers. He stressed that ending these tariffs would enhance economic and security cooperation between the US and India.

The resolution is part of a wider Democratic initiative to challenge Trump’s unilateral trade actions and reinforce Congress’ authority over trade policy. In October, Ross, Veasey, Krishnamoorthi, and other lawmakers urged the President to reverse his tariff policies to repair strained ties with India.
Trump initially imposed a 25 per cent tariff on Indian imports on August 1, 2025, followed by an additional 25 per cent increase days later, citing India’s continued purchase of Russian oil, which he claimed fueled Moscow’s war effort in Ukraine. The resolution represents a legislative push to undo these tariffs and restore balanced US-India trade relations.
