Lecornu faced criticism from both his own party and the opposition following the announcement of his cabinet. In fact, 12 of the 18 names in Lecornu's cabinet were from leaders of the previous government, sparking criticism against Lecornu. Lecornu was scheduled to address the National Assembly on Tuesday to outline his government's roadmap, but he resigned before that time.

Lecornu's resignation deepens the political crisis in France and increases pressure on President Macron. Macron has led three failed minority governments so far. Lecornu was tasked with the politically challenging task of passing a balanced budget in Parliament to reduce France's growing deficit. France's deficit in 2024 was 5.8% of GDP and debt 113%, well above EU rules that limit deficits to 3 percent.
Jordan Bardella, leader of the right-wing National Rally (RN), called for early parliamentary elections while speaking to the media at party headquarters with Marine Le Pen. Discontent was also growing within the presidential camp.
