Tehran: Iran’s powerful clerical body, the Assembly of Experts, has reportedly chosen a successor to the late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. However, officials have not publicly revealed the identity of the new leader.
The announcement came from senior clerics who confirmed that the majority of members had reached a consensus on the next head of the Islamic Republic. The Assembly of Experts is responsible for appointing the country’s highest religious and political authority. Authorities said the official declaration of the successor may be delayed due to security concerns during the ongoing regional conflict.

Cleric Confirms Majority Decision
Senior cleric Mohsen Heidari Alekasir confirmed in a video message released through Iranian media that a suitable candidate had already been selected. According to him, the decision followed internal discussions among members of the assembly and reflected the guidance previously given by Khamenei regarding his potential successor.
“The most suitable candidate has been approved by the majority of the Assembly of Experts,” Heidari said, suggesting that the chosen individual enjoys strong support among the country’s top clerical leadership.
He also indicated that the person selected could already be known internationally, hinting that foreign governments have discussed the possible candidate in the past.
Speculation Surrounds Khamenei’s Son
Following the announcement, speculation has again focused on Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of the late Supreme Leader. His name has frequently appeared in political discussions as a possible successor.
In previous remarks, US President Donald Trump described Mojtaba as an “unacceptable” option from Washington’s perspective, comments that have further fueled debate over Iran’s future leadership. However, Iranian authorities have not confirmed whether Mojtaba or any other specific figure has been chosen.
Israel Warns New Leader Could Be Targeted
Meanwhile, Israel has issued a stern warning regarding Iran’s next Supreme Leader. Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said that if Iran continues its confrontation with Israel, the person assuming the role could become a potential target.

Israeli officials also cautioned that those involved in selecting the new leader could face consequences if the conflict escalates further.
Security Concerns Delay Public Announcement
Reports suggest the Iranian leadership is delaying the official announcement primarily for security reasons. With tensions between Iran, Israel and the United States already high, authorities appear cautious about revealing the successor too quickly.
The secrecy surrounding the decision highlights the fragile political and security environment as Iran prepares for a major leadership transition while facing increasing regional pressure.
