US Iran War: Explosions rock Erbil as suspected Iranian drones target northern Iraq near US Consulate

Multiple explosions were reported in Erbil after suspected Iranian drone strikes targeted northern Iraq. The attacks came amid rising regional tensions and ongoing US-Iran diplomatic efforts.

Tehran: Various explosions were reported from Erbil in northern Iraq on Tuesday early morning after alleged Iranian drones hit various targets, including areas around the US Consulate, local media and security officials say. The incident is taking place against the backdrop of rising tensions in West Asia where efforts at diplomacy between the US and Iran remain precarious.

Explosions set off by drone strikes

In particular, police officials quoted in a media report said that at least four drones struck the Khalifan and Soran areas, located northeast of Erbil, causing fires. Two drones crashed near the struck areas.

At least seven explosions were witnessed in Erbil, including near the US Consulate, as reported by local media. After the attack, police officials reported the operation of more than 10 US military planes and drones in Erbil.

Wider reports on military actions

As part of its state-controlled broadcaster, IRIB reported, quoting Iraqi sources, the Americans' drone was shot down in Al Anbar province of Iraq. Moreover, local media also posted pictures of the wreckage of the US drone close to Haditha Dam.

Furthermore, the IRIB report also mentioned that the Khor Mor gas field in Sulaymaniyah is among the locations where the attacks were conducted which meant that military activities took place in different regions apart from Erbil.

Diplomacy is still at work

The attacks followed the statement by the US President, Donald Trump, saying that the US has been engaged in negotiations with Iran but is prepared for military engagement if there is no success with diplomacy.

Addressing the media, President Trump stated that the US is deeply engaged in talks with Iran and will take up "very strong military action" if diplomacy fails. Moreover, Trump added that he has halted military strikes after regional mediation led to fresh negotiations.

Currently, talks have been held to ensure safety of maritime navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and start fresh negotiations on the issue of Iran's nuclear program.
