New Delhi: Pakistan has reacted sharply after India supported a UN resolution on correcting global map representation, bringing Jammu-Kashmir into the latest diplomatic war of words between the two neighbours.
India has reiterated that its position on sovereignty and territorial integrity remains clear and non-negotiable.
The reaction came a day after India’s Ministry of External Affairs clarified its vote in favour of the United Nations resolution titled “Correct the Map: Rebalancing Global Cartographic Representation and Promoting Equitable Representation of the World's Regions.”
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India’s vote was aimed at promoting equal-area cartographic representation and did not endorse any specific map, projection, national boundaries or disputed territories.
India also made it clear that the UN resolution had no impact on its position regarding Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Sajjad Haider Khan claimed that India’s statements regarding Jammu and Kashmir were against what Islamabad described as “internationally recognised facts.”
Pakistan again referred to the Kashmir dispute as unresolved and linked it with old UN resolutions, while India has consistently maintained that Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of the country.
The UN General Assembly resolution focuses on improving the accuracy of world maps by encouraging the use of equal-area projections, particularly highlighting better representation of Africa’s landmass.
The resolution was adopted on September 4 with 164 countries voting in favour. Several nations abstained, while the United States voted against it.
India clarified that the resolution was related only to cartographic representation and had no connection with political boundaries or territorial disputes.
The Ministry of External Affairs said India’s stance on its sovereignty and territorial integrity remains “clear, consistent and non-negotiable.”
The latest exchange marks another diplomatic confrontation between India and Pakistan, with Jammu and Kashmir once again becoming the centre of political statements from both sides.
