Srinagar: The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Jammu and Kashmir Crime Branch has filed a chargesheet against five accused in an alleged migrant property fraud involving 14 kanals and 3 marlas of land in Pattan, Baramulla district. The complainant allegedly paid more than ₹1 crore, but neither received possession of the property nor recovered the money.
The chargesheet was submitted before the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) in Sopore in connection with FIR No. 34/2017. The case concerns land bearing Survey No. 349 in Wussan, Goshbugh, Pattan, reportedly owned by Jawahar Lal Bhat.
According to investigators, the alleged fraud involved impersonation, fabricated identity documents, misuse of a power of attorney and criminal conspiracy. The five chargesheeted individuals are Brij Nath, Ghulam Mohi-Ud-Din Dar, Ghulam Mohammad Sheikh, Zahoor Ahmed Dar and Reyaz Ahmad Rather. The investigation reportedly found evidence relating to the alleged use of false identities and documents in the disputed transaction.
Officials said Brij Nath, who allegedly used multiple identities, including Soom Nath, Hadi Nath and Mohan Lal, and Ghulam Mohi-Ud-Din Dar were arrested in late September. Dar has since obtained bail, while Brij Nath remains in custody, according to the information provided.
EOW had previously filed another chargesheet against Brij Nath and Ghulam Mohammad Sheikh in a separate case registered under FIR No. 27/2021 in August 2023. Further investigations into other cases are also underway.
EOW Kashmir has urged buyers to verify ownership records, identity documents and legal authorisations before entering property transactions, particularly those involving land with disputed ownership histories. A chargesheet represents the investigating agency’s allegations; the accused remain entitled to due process, and guilt can be established only through judicial proceedings.
