Srinagar: US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor on Wednesday described Jammu and Kashmir as an “important part of India” during his first visit to the Union Territory. He also indicated that the United States may reconsider its travel advisory for the region.
Gor’s remarks came during his visit to Srinagar, where he met Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and held discussions on various issues. His comments are being seen as a significant development in the diplomatic engagement between India and the US regarding Jammu and Kashmir.

The US State Department currently places Jammu and Kashmir, except eastern Ladakh and Leh, under a Level 4 “Do Not Travel” advisory, citing concerns related to terrorism and civil unrest.
During his visit, Gor said the US would look into concerns regarding the advisory and reconsider its position. The travel warning has remained a major concern for the tourism sector in Jammu and Kashmir, with local leaders repeatedly urging a review.
The advisory has often been criticised by stakeholders who believe it impacts tourism and creates a negative perception about security conditions in the region.

Sergio Gor’s visit marks his first trip to Jammu and Kashmir after becoming the US Ambassador to India and President Donald Trump’s Special Envoy for South and Central Asia.
The visit comes amid heightened focus on the region following security challenges, including the April 2025 Pahalgam terror attack and India’s subsequent Operation Sindoor.
The US envoy is also scheduled to visit Ladakh after completing his engagements in Kashmir.
Gor’s statement describing Jammu and Kashmir as an “important part of India” holds significance due to the sensitivity surrounding the region’s status and the long-standing dispute between India and Pakistan.

The remarks indicate a shift in the tone of Washington’s communication on Jammu and Kashmir and come at a time when India and the US are working to strengthen strategic cooperation.
Ahead of Gor’s visit, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said he would discuss issues concerning the Union Territory with the US ambassador but would not raise complaints against India.
Abdullah said solutions to Jammu and Kashmir’s problems would come through dialogue with the central government and not from any foreign country.
“It has never been my habit to lodge complaints about my country to an ambassador of another country,” Abdullah said, adding that the resolution of issues lies with the Centre.
Gor’s Jammu and Kashmir visit comes amid efforts by India and the US to deepen cooperation in areas including counter-terrorism, border security and law enforcement.
The US ambassador had earlier held talks with senior Indian officials, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, where issues related to security cooperation were discussed.
His visit to Kashmir and Ladakh is being closely watched as it reflects Washington’s evolving approach towards the region.
