New Delhi: The United States has suffered significant losses in the ongoing conflict with Iran. According to reports, at least 16 US military aircraft have been destroyed so far. These include 10 state-of-the-art MQ-9 Reaper drones, which were shot down by enemy fire, repors Dynamite News correspondent.
It was not just enemy attacks; several accidents also contributed to these losses. Three F-15 fighter jets were lost in Kuwait due to accidental "friendly fire." Additionally, a KC-135 Stratotanker crashed during a mid-air refueling operation, resulting in the deaths of six crew members.
The US has also sustained losses as a result of Iranian missile attacks. Five KC-135 aircraft were damaged during an attack on a base in Saudi Arabia. Furthermore, drones stationed at an airfield in Jordan were targeted by ballistic missiles.
Drones like the MQ-9 Reaper are frequently deployed on high-risk missions because they are unmanned and relatively inexpensive. Consequently, they are often considered "expendable"—meaning they can be lost without incurring prohibitive costs.
Experts believe that the US has flown an exceptionally high number of missions (sorties) during this conflict, thereby increasing the associated risks.
Although the US has achieved "localized air superiority" in certain areas, Iran's air defense systems remain active, preventing the US from establishing complete control over the airspace.
Iran continues to launch retaliatory strikes, particularly targeting oil and gas installations. This has further heightened tensions in the region. Securing critical maritime routes, such as the Strait of Hormuz, also remains a major challenge.
The conflict has now entered its third week, and losses continue to mount on both sides. For the United States, this serves as a signal that this conflict will not be easy, and further challenges may lie ahead.
