Washington: US President Donald Trump has stated that his government is pursuing negotiations with Iran on a “low profile” basis amid a deadlock regarding the reopening of the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. According to Trump, the United States is currently counting upon economic and diplomatic measures and not military ones.
This follows in the wake of continued heightened tensions between the two countries, especially in light of hard terms set by Iran regarding the reopening of the water route. Trump went on to say that Iran’s economy was experiencing problems because of its current state of inflation and pressure.
In an effort to portray the situation as a chess game, Trump noted that it would come to a close at some point in time. “It will work out. It always works out. It’s like a chess game.”
The American president believes that sanctions imposed by his country had increased problems for Iran. However, low prices of crude oil had limited the effect of the dispute on American citizens.
The Strait of Hormuz is now considered to be the epicenter of the ongoing crisis between the US and Iran. The strategically significant strait is the passageway for a considerable share of world’s oil and natural gas supplies.
The Iranians have set a condition that before any further deal would be signed, the US should stop its blockade policies, drop oil sanctions and deal with the problems caused by their previous military operations.
On the other hand, Iran has dismissed any claims of having direct dialogue with the US. According to the Iranian foreign minister, Mr. Abbas Araqchi, neither Tehran nor Washington was engaged in any direct negotiations. However, the two parties were communicating using intermediaries.
It is reported that Iran had been trying to seek sanctions relief, compensation for military strikes, and assurances about the conduct of the US in the region.
