Holika Dahan 2026 Falls Between Bhadra Kaal and Chandra Grahan
New Delhi: Holika Dahan, which takes place on the full moon day of the month of Phalgun, is in the news this year due to special coincidences. According to the Hindu calendar, the full moon date will begin at 5:55 pm on March 2, 2026, and will last until 5:09 pm on March 3, 2026. Due to the date, Bhadra, and lunar eclipse falling on the same day, people are confused about the correct time for the burning.
According to the calendar, Bhadra will begin at 5:55 pm on March 2 and will last until 5:28 am on March 3. This year, Bhadra is observed in the Earth and in the zodiac sign Leo. According to astrology, auspicious activities are prohibited during the Bhadra period, although charity can be performed. Holika Dahan is specifically prohibited during the Bhadra Mukha period, while burning is permitted during the Bhadra Puchchha period.
According to religious beliefs, it is auspicious to perform Holika Dahan during the Bhadra Puchh period. This year, the time between 12:50 am and 2:02 am on March 3rd is considered the best time for Holika Dahan. Devotees are advised to confirm the time with their local almanac or priest so that the puja can be performed as per the prescribed rituals.
The first lunar eclipse of 2026 is also occurring on this day. This eclipse will begin at 3:20 pm on March 3rd and will last until 6:47 pm. The Sutak period of the eclipse begins 9 hours before the eclipse. Therefore, the Sutak period will begin at 6:20 am on March 3rd. During the Sutak period, temple doors are kept closed, and touching idols, cooking, or eating food is prohibited.
Due to the conjunction of Bhadra, Purnima, and the eclipse, special caution is needed regarding the timing of Holika Dahan this time. According to religious beliefs, burning Holika at the right time symbolizes the destruction of negative forces and the arrival of positive energy. Therefore, devotees should burn Holika at the designated time and according to the prescribed rituals and follow the rules during the eclipse.
