New Delhi: The deadly collapse of a paying guest accommodation in Delhi’s Satya Niketan has triggered serious questions over building safety norms and regulatory failures. At least six people lost their lives after the five-storey structure collapsed, leading to a massive rescue operation.
Amid the tragedy, allegations have surfaced that around 75 beds were placed inside the building, raising concerns over whether the accommodation was operating beyond permitted limits.
MCD Commissioner Sanjeev Khirwar faced questions from reporters regarding the alleged number of beds and safety approvals of the collapsed building. According to reports, he avoided giving a detailed response during the interaction and said he would answer separately.
The incident has intensified scrutiny on the civic body over monitoring of PG accommodations in densely populated student areas.
Following the collapse, multiple agencies including the Delhi Police, Fire Department, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) launched a major rescue operation.
Several people were pulled out from the debris, while the injured were shifted to hospitals including AIIMS Trauma Centre for treatment. Authorities also evacuated nearby structures as a precautionary measure.
The Satya Niketan tragedy has once again highlighted concerns over unauthorised construction, overcrowded PG facilities and lack of fire safety compliance in Delhi’s student hubs.
Police have registered a case against the building owner and other individuals linked to the property. A magisterial inquiry has also been ordered to determine the exact cause of the collapse and identify those responsible.
As investigations continue, authorities are facing questions over how such a large student accommodation facility allegedly operated without adequate safety checks. The findings of the probe will determine whether negligence or regulatory lapses contributed to the disaster.
