Mumbai Monsoon Evacuation: In MHADA has declared 82 dangerous buildings in the island city area of Mumbai as highly unsafe in a major pre-monsoon safety exercise and has started the process to vacate the structures before the onset of heavy rains.
Annual Survey Shows Dangerous Buildings In Mumbai
The assessment was done by Mumbai Building Repairs and Reconstruction Board of MHADA during its annual pre-monsoon inspection. The authority said that of the 82 dangerous buildings in Mumbai, 43 had also been classified as highly risky in last year’s survey showing continuing structural problems.
These buildings house a total of 2,736 occupants, 2,256 of whom are residential residents and 480 are non-residential tenants. As part of the ongoing Mumbai Monsoon Evacuation drive, MHADA said notices have already been served to several occupants to vacate the unsafe premises.
29 tenants, who have been given notice, have moved to MHADA Transit Camps and 36 families have made their own arrangements for alternative accommodation.
Remaining occupants are being served with eviction notices and the process of vacating the buildings is underway, officials said. MHADA has estimated that about 2,102 occupants in transit camps will need accommodation arrangements. They have already made preparations for their move under the Mumbai Monsoon Evacuation plan.
As the Mumbai Monsoon Season is approaching, MHADA has appealed to the residents of the affected buildings to cooperate with the evacuation teams and follow all the safety instructions. Timely evacuation is key to prevent accidents, injuries and loss of life due to possible structural failures during heavy rainfall, the authority said.
Residents have also been advised to immediately report any signs of structural damage, cracks or any building related emergencies. MHADA has made its control room functional and has asked the citizens to stay alert during the Mumbai Monsoon Alert period.
