New Delhi: Veteran actor Kalpana Iyer and choreographer Sandip Soparrkar have come out in support of Ananya Panday following criticism surrounding her Bharatanatyam-inspired dance sequence in the upcoming film Chand Mera Dil.

The performance recently sparked debate on social media, with some users questioning the fusion-style presentation of the classical dance form in a cinematic setting.

Sandip Soparrkar Calls Backlash “Unfair”

Reacting to the controversy, Sandip Soparrkar shared a strongly worded message on Instagram defending the young actor. He described the criticism as “absolutely rubbish” and argued that Ananya was being unfairly targeted for a film performance designed for entertainment and storytelling.

According to Soparrkar, dance forms have continuously evolved through cinema, television, and digital platforms over the years. He emphasized that the performance was never intended to be a traditional Bharatanatyam recital on a classical stage.

The choreographer also praised Ananya’s dedication and training, stating that she approached the sequence with sincerity, discipline, and hard work. Soparrkar mentioned that he had mentored Ananya since her earlier public appearances and believed she deserved appreciation rather than online criticism.

Kalpana Iyer Extends Support

Veteran actor Kalpana Iyer also backed Ananya publicly and urged people to stop harshly judging performers. Responding to Soparrkar’s post, Iyer said people should support a young actor trying to perform to the best of her ability instead of spreading negativity.

She added that Ananya was not claiming to be a classical dance expert and was simply performing a role as required in cinema. Kalpana Iyer recently returned to public attention after clips from her stage performance of the iconic song “Rambha Ho” gained popularity online following the release of Dhurandhar 2.

Debate Over Classical Dance in Cinema

The discussion surrounding Ananya Panday’s performance has once again highlighted the ongoing debate between artistic purity and cinematic adaptation of classical dance forms.

Earlier, actor Chunky Panday had also defended his daughter, stating that audiences should understand the context of a performance before criticising it. The controversy continues to generate mixed reactions online, with some supporting artistic experimentation while others argue for preserving traditional forms more carefully.
