New Delhi: Since coming under the Tata Group's control, Air India's transformation has begun. The company is now accelerating its expansion drive. According to the latest information, Air India has begun negotiations with both Airbus and Boeing to purchase 300 new aircraft.

The new proposal is twice as large as the previous plan. Earlier, it was reported that Air India was considering purchasing approximately 200 narrow-body aircraft, with 25 to 30 wide-body jets also on the list.

Now, according to sources, Air India is planning to acquire 80 to 100 additional wide-body jets. This means the company is now considering a potential purchase of 300 aircraft—a significant increase from its previous plan.

Boeing and Airbus may share the deal

It is believed that this major deal could be split between Boeing and Airbus, although it is not yet clear who will receive the order for how many aircraft.

Airbus declined to comment directly, stating that it does not publicly discuss confidential negotiations with customers. There has been no official response from Air India or Boeing either.

Why are wide-body aircraft needed?

  • Wide-body aircraft are typically used for long-haul international flights.
  • These aircraft will help Air India strengthen its international network.
  • Also, older aircraft will be replaced with safer, modern jets equipped with new technology.

Following the June Boeing 787 crash in Ahmedabad, which claimed the lives of 260 people, Air India has tightened its safety and aircraft quality policies.
