Banking Access Reaches 99.92% Villages in India (Image Source: Internet)
New Delhi: The government has announced that nearly every village in the country now has access to banking services. Every village has access to banking services, claims the government. According to official data, banking outlets (bank branches, Business Correspondents (BCs), and services such as the India Post Payments Bank) are available within a 5-kilometer radius for 99.92% of villages, reports Dynamite News correspondent.
The objective of the initiative has been achieved by enhancing access to financial services in rural areas and integrating people into the formal banking system. The Pivotal Role of the ‘Jan Dhan Darshak App’
The entire framework is being monitored through a specialized application known as the 'Jan Dhan Darshak App.' Being powered by GIS (Geographic Information System) technology, the app allows for the real-time tracking of the banking infrastructure's status across the country. To get real-time and proper data on which regions still require banking services, the banks continuously update their data on this app.
According to government statistics, the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli has successfully provided banking facilities to 100% of its villages.
This clearly indicates that the government's objective has been largely achieved, although minor gaps still persist in certain remote and inaccessible areas.
Despite this monumental achievement, several challenges still remain.
Due to these factors, delivering banking services to certain villages continues to be a difficult task.
In accordance with the regulations set by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the process of establishing new banking outlets in areas currently lacking such facilities remains a continuous endeavor.
The responsibility for overseeing this initiative lies with the State Level Bankers' Committees (SLBCs) and the Union Territory Level Bankers' Committees (UTLBCs). These committees make decisions in collaboration with the state government, banks, and other relevant stakeholders.
Before opening a branch or outlet in any new area, banks consider several factors:
The expansion of banking services is undertaken only after taking all these factors into consideration.
