NHAI Introduces MLFF Toll System in Tamil Nadu
Chennai: In a major step towards modernizing the country's highway infrastructure, the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) is implementing a barrier-free toll collection system at three major toll plazas in Tamil Nadu. This system is part of a new technology being implemented across the country, ensuring smoother traffic flow.
The new Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) system will be rolled out at the Nemili and Chennasamudram toll plazas on NH-48, along with the Paranur toll plaza on NH-45.
The MLFF system is completely different from traditional toll plazas. Vehicles will not need to stop or slow down to pay the toll. Vehicles will pass at normal speed, and the toll will be automatically deducted.
This system will operate through a combination of RFID-based FASTags and artificial intelligence-enabled Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras. As a vehicle passes through a toll plaza, an RFID reader will read the FASTag information, and an ANPR camera will capture the number plate. The system will then verify the data in real time and deduct the toll amount from the account.
According to officials, preparations for this project have already begun in Tamil Nadu. Locations for ANPR cameras and other necessary infrastructure are being identified. Installation is expected to be completed within the next four months, followed by software integration and testing.
The system will use dual-layer technology, which will increase accuracy and prevent any revenue loss. If the FASTag fails, the ANPR camera will act as a backup to identify the vehicle and ensure toll collection.
The implementation of a barrier-free toll system will eliminate long queues at toll plazas. This will save fuel and reduce vehicular pollution. Additionally, it will reduce toll infrastructure maintenance costs.
Tamil Nadu has become one of the first states to adopt this advanced technology. This positions the state as a leader in the country's pursuit of a smart, fast, and efficient highway travel system.
