Bengal: Massive rains trigger multiple landslides in Kalimpong; Life paralysed

Rainfall across the Kalimpong district has eased. NH10 has been affected by multiple landslides, and traffic on NH10 is currently closed. NH717A, an alternative highway to Sikkim, has also been affected.

Kolkata: Incessant heavy rainfall in Kalimpong on Saturday resulted in multiple landslides across Kalimpong. However no major damage or casualties have been reported so far, reports Dynamite News correspondent.

Shrihari Pandey Superintendent of Police (SP) said, "Rainfall across the Kalimpong district has eased. NH10 has been affected by multiple landslides, and traffic on NH10 is currently closed. NH717A, an alternative highway to Sikkim, has also been affected by landslides near the Reshi border, and traffic movement to Sikkim is disrupted."

Raju Bista Darjeeling MP took to social media X and said that there have been reports of deaths as well as severe damages to properties and infrastructure.

Bista wrote on X, “I am extremely anguished to learn about the massive damages caused due to extremely heavy rainfall in many parts of Darjeeling and Kalimpong districts. There have been deaths, and loss of properties, and damages to the infrastructure. I am taking stock of the situation, and in touch with the relevant authorities.”

Darjeeling MP further said, “We have already instructed our BJP karyakartas to mobilise in helping and assisting people. We will do everything in our power to help and assist our people. I also appeal to all our Alliance Partners, and other political and social organisations in the region to coordinate efforts, so that we can reach timely help and support to those in need.”
