Naming Controversy

Initially, there were political speculations that CM Stalin might name the flyover after his father, former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, which could have led to opposition from various quarters. To avoid controversy, the flyover has been named after GD Naidu, the renowned self-taught engineer from Coimbatore, often called the “Edison of India” for his inventive contributions to science and technology.

As per the city officials, the flyover to dramatically reduce travel time along one of Coimbatore’s busiest corridors. By diverting through-traffic from surface roads, the bridge will ease congestion in neighborhoods, improve commercial transport efficiency, and make commuting safer and faster for thousands of residents daily.
