Coronavirus disease (COVID-19)
New Delhi: There is a surge in the cases of COVID-19 once again, and its effect is now clearly visible in India as well. According to the latest data released by the Ministry of Health, the number of active cases of COVID-19 in India has reached 1,010 as of May 27.
According to the Dynamite News correspondent, new cases of infection have been confirmed from Patna AIIMS to Delhi, Karnataka, and Maharashtra. Meanwhile, a new sub-variant, NB.1.8.1, has also knocked in India, which has increased the concern of health experts and the administration.
Female doctor infected in Patna AIIMS
A female doctor has been found infected with COVID-19 in AIIMS, located in Patna, the capital of Bihar. With this, a total of seven infected have been confirmed in the hospital. At the same time, 19 new cases have been reported in Ghaziabad so far. The pace of corona has not slowed down in Delhi either, and 104 patients have been confirmed here. There is news of the death of a patient from Karnataka, due to which there is an atmosphere of concern and alertness in the state.
NB.1.8.1: New variant to be monitored
The new sub-variant NB.1.8.1, believed to be part of Omicron's JN.1 lineage, was first identified in China. It has since spread to countries such as Singapore, Hong Kong, and the US. In India, it was first identified in Tamil Nadu in April 2025. The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified it as a "variant to be monitored" (VUM), which means it needs to be monitored, although it does not yet fall into the category of concern (VOC).
How dangerous is NB.1.8.1?
According to initial reports, this variant does not cause more severe illness. Its symptoms are similar to those of common flu or mild covid, and most patients recover with treatment at home. Experts believe that NB.1.8.1 is less lethal than older variants such as Delta and does not dodge the immunity provided by existing vaccines.
Vaccines and boosters still effective
Experts have also clarified that the currently available vaccines and booster doses remain effective against this new variant. Vaccination is still considered the most effective way to prevent infection. People have been appealed to wear masks, maintain social distance, and avoid crowds.
Government's preparation and warning
In view of this increase in COVID cases, the Ministry of Health has instructed the states to increase surveillance, maintain the rate of testing, and ensure stock of essential medicines and resources. Some states have also instructed hospitals to remain alert and keep COVID wards active.
