Schools Closed in Odisha

As the cyclone Montha is approaching, schools and Anganwadi centres in Odisha have been closed till 30 October. The leaves of all government employees in nine districts have been cancelled due to emergency situation.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning that Cyclone "Montha" will bring heavy rain, strong winds, and rough seas to India's east coast over the next two days. The cyclone was named by Yemen, after a village known for its fishing.

Naming of Cyclones and Its Importance

Previously, cyclones were identified solely by date, which created confusion and made record-keeping difficult.

In 2004, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and ESCAP established a formal system for naming cyclones. Under this system, storms are selected based on suggestions from different countries on a rotating basis.

Naming Method

A group of 13 countries (the WMO/ESCAP Panel on Tropical Cyclones) decides names for cyclones in the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea. These include:
India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Myanmar, Thailand, Iran, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Yemen.

In India, this process is handled by the IMD.

Importance of Naming

Storm warnings and information are easily accessible to the public.

Maintaining scientific records becomes easier.

This system has proven extremely effective for countries with maritime borders like India.

According to the IMD, heavy rainfall is expected in the following areas over the next two days:

Rayalaseema, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Mahe, and coastal Karnataka: Very heavy rainfall of 115-210 mm in 24 hours.

Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, and South Odisha: Continuous heavy rainfall is expected until October 30.

A red alert has been issued in these areas, and citizens have been urged to remain vigilant.
