New Delhi: The Delhi government on Thursday announced a mandatory two-day work from home policy for government employees as part of a broader fuel and energy conservation drive amid rising global uncertainties linked to the West Asia conflict.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said similar guidelines would soon be issued for the private sector as well. The measures come following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent appeal for austerity and reduced fuel consumption.

Addressing a press conference in Delhi, the Chief Minister said the government has prepared a two-level action plan focused on reducing fuel usage and easing traffic congestion in the national capital.
Under the new policy, government employees will work from home for two days every week. Private companies will also be advised to adopt similar arrangements wherever possible.
The Delhi government said the move is aimed at reducing daily commuting pressure, fuel consumption and pollution levels.
As part of the conservation exercise, the government has reduced the use of official vehicles across departments. Petrol allocation for government officials has also been cut by 20 per cent from the existing limit of 200 litres.
The administration further announced that no new government vehicles will be purchased for the next six months.
Officials and ministers will also observe “Metro Monday” every week, encouraging the use of public transport instead of official cars.
To manage traffic flow more efficiently, the government has introduced staggered office timings. Delhi government offices will now function from 10:30 am to 7 pm, while Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) offices will operate from 8:30 am to 5 pm.

The government believes staggered schedules will help reduce peak-hour congestion on roads and public transport networks.
The Chief Minister appealed to residents to voluntarily observe one “No Vehicle Day” every week. Businesses and traders have also been encouraged to shift cargo movement from trucks to railway transport wherever possible.
Additionally, transport allowance for employees will be increased by 10 per cent to support greater use of public transport systems. The Delhi government said the measures are designed to promote responsible energy use and prepare the city for potential global fuel supply disruptions.
