New Delhi: Former Lt. Governor of Puducherry Kiran Bedi has said that she did not see any probability of one third reservation of seats for women in the parliament before 2029, reports Dynamite News correspondent.

Reacting to the defeat of the Bill relating to 33 per cent reservation for Women in Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assemblies, She told “Dynamite News” on Saturday: “Time alone will tell its consequences in the 2029 general elections”.

Political Complexities

The former IPS officer added that she did not see “any probability of one third reservation of seats for women before 2029 in the parliament, in view of political complexities such as, the interplay between population, economic development, census and delimitation and also the restrictive constitutional provisions”.

While women today were an aspirational vote bank to be stakeholders in the national growth, it could happen only if 2029 poll make way for a government with two third majority which has the wisdom of finding the right balance between all the factors and unites for a “Viksit Bharat” (Developed India), she quipped.

What is Women's Reservation Bill?

The 131st Constitutional amendment Bill to provide one third reservation of seats for women in the legislatures, was defeated in the Lok Sabha on Friday as the ruling NDA government did not get the required two-thirds majority. Of the 528 LS members who voted, 298 supported the Bill and 230 opposed. The government needed 352 votes for the two-thirds majority required for passage of the Bill.
