New Delhi: Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) Election 2026 produced one of the biggest political surprises on campus on Saturday as independent candidate Deepanshu Shokeen defeated nominees backed by established student organisations to win the Vice-President post.
The 21-year-old student leader secured 30,615 votes, defeating ABVP candidate Ishu Maurya and NSUI’s Virr Chatrath by a significant margin. His victory became the defining moment of the election as he managed to break through the traditional dominance of major student groups without the backing of a political organisation.
From seeking an NSUI ticket to contesting as an independent candidate and finally securing a key position in the DUSU central panel, Deepanshu Shokeen’s journey has emerged as the biggest talking point of Delhi University’s student politics.
Deepanshu Shokeen’s electoral journey took an unexpected turn before the DUSU polls when he initially sought candidature from the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), the student wing associated with the Congress party.
According to reports, Shokeen had filed his nomination while seeking an NSUI ticket, but later decided to contest independently after being asked to withdraw from the race.
The decision transformed his campaign from an organisation-backed contest into an individual political battle. Facing candidates supported by powerful student bodies, Shokeen focused on direct student outreach, campus-level campaigning and issues affecting everyday university life.
His independent campaign gained momentum as he built a separate identity among students and positioned himself as a candidate representing ground-level campus concerns.
Deepanshu Shokeen is a postgraduate student in the Department of Buddhist Studies at the University of Delhi. Before entering the DUSU central panel election, he completed his graduation from Shaheed Bhagat Singh College.
He belongs to Peeragarhi village in Delhi and comes from a middle-class family background. His father works as a bus conductor, while his mother is associated with the Anganwadi system.
According to reports, his family wanted him to prepare for the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) examination. However, Shokeen chose student politics and became increasingly active in campus-related issues.
His political journey began during his college years, where he worked as a student representative and gradually developed a presence in Delhi University’s student community.
One of the most visible aspects of Deepanshu Shokeen’s election campaign was his decision to walk barefoot across university campuses. The symbolic campaign style attracted attention among students and became closely associated with his public image during the DUSU election. The move was linked to his activism on student safety concerns following the Satya Niketan tragedy.
His campaign highlighted issues including hostel facilities, student accommodation, campus security and infrastructure challenges faced by university students. The combination of emotional messaging, grassroots engagement and a strong personal connection with voters helped him stand apart from candidates representing established organisations.
Deepanshu Shokeen registered a decisive victory in the Vice-President contest with 30,615 votes. ABVP’s Ishu Maurya secured 16,910 votes and finished second, while NSUI’s Virr Chatrath received 4,313 votes.
Shokeen defeated candidates from ABVP, NSUI, AISA-SFI alliance and other independent contenders, becoming the only independent candidate to win one of the four major central panel positions. The results saw ABVP capture three key posts, including the President, Secretary and Joint Secretary posts, while Shokeen secured the Vice-President position.
For decades, DUSU elections have largely revolved around competition between major student organisations with strong political networks and extensive campus structures.
ABVP and NSUI have traditionally remained the most prominent players in Delhi University student politics. However, Shokeen’s victory has highlighted the growing role of individual candidates, independent campaigns and student-focused narratives.
His success demonstrated that direct voter connect, issue-based campaigning and personal credibility can influence campus elections even without the support of a major student organisation.
The DUSU Election 2026 campaign witnessed discussions around several major student concerns, including safety, hostel availability, accommodation facilities, academic challenges and campus infrastructure.
Shokeen’s campaign focused heavily on these issues, particularly student welfare and accountability. His supporters highlighted his involvement in student movements and his presence during protests related to campus safety issues as important factors behind his popularity.
The election was closely watched because of the intense competition between ABVP, NSUI and other student groups. The contest also reflected the larger political environment of university campuses, where student elections often become a platform for debates on representation, youth leadership and social issues.

With his victory, Deepanshu Shokeen will now become part of the DUSU central leadership for the 2026-27 academic session.
