What will be the effect on vehicles?

  • If your car is made after 2023, especially BS6 Phase-2 model, then it is fully compatible with E20 fuel. But this fuel can cause some problems for old vehicles, especially cars between 2013-2022.
  • Putting E20 in vehicles made for E10 can cause a slight drop in mileage and rubber or plastic components such as gaskets and fuel injectors can get damaged quickly. However, there is no immediate major damage to the vehicle.
  • Keeping this in mind, vehicle manufacturers are planning to bring E20 upgrade kits, so that old vehicles can also be made eligible for this fuel.
  • According to government data, foreign exchange worth about Rs 54,000 crore has been saved so far by ethanol blending. India currently imports about 85% of its oil needs, which is a heavy burden on the economy.
  • The government aims to start selling E20 fuel completely in the country by 2025.
  • The use of this fuel also reduces carbon monoxide by 35% and sulfur dioxide in the smoke emitted from vehicles. This will reduce air pollution and the environment will be safe.
  • E20 petrol is a kind of blended fuel, in which 80% conventional petrol and 20% ethanol are mixed.

What is ethanol?

Ethanol is a kind of alcohol-based biofuel, which is made from agricultural products like sugarcane, maize, rice. It is better for the environment than normal petrol, as it causes less pollution.
