New Delhi: The Supreme Court has announced that the appeal petition filed by Edappadi Palaniswami regarding the issue of concealing asset details in his nomination affidavit will be heard on April 14.
In the 2021 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election, AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi Palaniswami, who contested from the Edappadi constituency, was accused of providing incorrect information about his assets in his nomination affidavit.
A person named Milani filed a petition in the Salem court, seeking action against Palaniswami. After hearing the case, the court ordered the Salem District Crime Branch police to conduct an inquiry and register a case if there was prima facie evidence.
Following this, Edappadi Palaniswami filed a petition in the Madras High Court seeking to quash the order issued by the Salem court. The High Court, after hearing the case, stated that it could not interfere with the Salem court’s order and directed him to cooperate with the police investigation. On the 23rd, the High Court dismissed his petition.
Subsequently, Edappadi Palaniswami filed an appeal against the High Court’s order. While hearing the appeal, the Supreme Court issued an interim stay on proceedings in the trial court. After this, the case remained pending for over a year without being taken up for hearing.
In this situation, the respondent Milani’s side approached the Supreme Court bench, headed by Justice Vikram Nath, requesting that Palaniswami’s appeal petition be taken up for expedited hearing. It was noted that the case had been listed 16 times but had not been taken up for hearing. It was also highlighted that the next legislative assembly election had already been announced.
Accepting the request, the judges stated that the appeal filed by Edappadi Palaniswami regarding the concealment of asset details and providing incorrect information in the nomination affidavit will be heard on April 14.
