New Delhi: The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has launched a new online service that allows families to report the death of their deceased members and request the deactivation of their Aadhaar number through the MyAadhaar portal. Earlier, Aadhaar numbers of deceased individuals often remained active, leading to potential misuse in banking, property transactions, or welfare schemes.

Before this, families had to visit an Aadhaar center to report a death, but now the entire process can be completed online. Families will log in to the MyAadhaar portal, enter the required information, upload the death certificate, and submit the request. This initiative aims to make Aadhaar's digital records more accurate and reliable.

e-Aadhaar Mobile App Coming Soon

The UIDAI is also developing a new mobile app, 'e-Aadhaar,' which will be launched by the end of this year. This app will allow users to update their Aadhaar details such as name, date of birth, address, and mobile number directly from their smartphones, without any paperwork or long queues.

The app will utilize artificial intelligence and facial recognition technology, making the update process faster and more secure. However, biometric updates such as fingerprint and iris scans will still require a visit to an Aadhaar center. The UIDAI has stated that this rule will be effective from November 2025.

Significant Changes

Aadhaar is linked to several critical services in India, including bank accounts, mobile SIMs, government benefits, and hospital records. Therefore, its accuracy and security are paramount. These new initiatives by the UIDAI are significant steps towards preventing Aadhaar misuse and making it more user-friendly.

Now, it is easier for families to deactivate the Aadhaar records of their deceased loved ones, and the upcoming app will simplify Aadhaar updates. This will further strengthen digital governance in the country.
