New Delhi: Delhi’s Jantar Mantar witnessed a fresh protest on Friday as demonstrators gathered under the banner of the ‘Reservation Hatao Andolan’, demanding changes in the existing reservation system and related policies.

The protesters called for a review of caste-based reservation and argued that economic conditions should also be considered while deciding eligibility for government benefits. They carried posters and banners while raising concerns over the current framework.

Protesters Demand Economic Criteria and Creamy Layer Rules

Participants in the demonstration demanded that financial status should play a greater role in providing educational and government support. They said assistance should reach economically weaker sections irrespective of caste.

The protesters also called for the introduction of a ‘creamy layer’ criterion in reservation policies for Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), and Other Backward Classes (OBC).

They further raised questions over the University Grants Commission (UGC) framework, saying existing policies should be reviewed in view of changing social and economic conditions.

Delhi Police Detain Demonstrators

Several protesters were detained by Delhi Police during the demonstration. Police officials said the gathering at Jantar Mantar was held without the required permission.

According to officials, a protest had been permitted at Ramlila Ground and a no-objection certificate (NOC) was issued for that location. Police stated that restrictions under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) were already in force in the New Delhi district.

Authorities also appealed to citizens not to circulate unverified information on social media and warned that action could be taken against those spreading false content.
