New Delhi: With the beginning of a new political innings in Bangladesh, India has also signaled a renewed commitment to strengthening its relations. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla represented India at the swearing-in ceremony in Dhaka and met with newly elected Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. During the ceremony, he handed over Prime Minister Narendra Modi's personal congratulatory letter to Rahman.

Invitation to visit Delhi

Om Birla stated that in his letter, Prime Minister Modi invited Tarique Rahman to visit India soon. Describing the meeting as "meaningful and positive," he said that the commitment to further strengthen the lasting and strong partnership between India and Bangladesh was reiterated.

Emphasis on people-centric cooperation

Bangladesh High Commissioner to India Riaz Hamidullah also said that the two leaders expressed their desire to further strengthen bilateral relations and work together on people-centric policies for the welfare of the people of both countries.

End of 18-Month Interim Government

The swearing-in of Tarique Rahman marked the end of the 18-month-long interim government led by Muhammad Yunus. This period was marked by political instability in Bangladesh and a chill in relations with India.

Presence of South Asian Leaders

Several senior political and military leaders, including Bangladesh President Shahabuddin, were present at the swearing-in ceremony. A total of 25 ministers and 24 ministers of state were also sworn in. The presence of representatives from India, Pakistan, and other South Asian countries made the event regionally significant.
