New Delhi: India has emerged as the world’s third-largest country in renewable energy installed capacity, trailing only China and the United States, according to the latest data released by the International Renewable Energy Agency.
Union minister Pralhad Joshi said India has surpassed Brazil to secure the third position, with a total installed renewable capacity of 250.52 GW as of December 2025.

India recorded a significant addition of 55.3 GW in non-fossil fuel capacity during the financial year 2025–26, underlining the country’s rapid progress in clean energy expansion.
Globally, China leads with 2,258.02 GW of renewable capacity, followed by the United States at 467.92 GW. Brazil and Germany rank fourth and fifth, respectively.
The minister highlighted that in July 2025, renewable energy met 51.5% of India’s electricity demand at peak, marking a record achievement.
During 2025–26, India’s total power generation reached 1,845.921 billion units, with non-fossil sources contributing 29.2% of the total output.
India achieved 50% of its cumulative installed electricity capacity from non-fossil fuel sources in June 2025—five years ahead of its 2030 target under the Paris Agreement commitments.
As of March 31, the country’s total installed non-fossil capacity stood at 283.46 GW, including solar, wind, hydro, bioenergy, and nuclear power. Solar energy leads the segment with over 150 GW, followed by wind power and hydropower contributions.

India is now working towards achieving 500 GW of installed electricity capacity from non-fossil sources by 2030, in line with commitments announced at COP26.
The government is also planning to strengthen its climate goals for the 2031–2035 period, including reducing emissions intensity and increasing the share of clean energy in total capacity.
Officials said the progress reflects India’s growing role in the global clean energy transition while balancing rising power demand.
