India’s Ambassador to Japan, Ms. Nagma Mohamed Mallick, has been concurrently accredited as India’s next Ambassador to the Marshall Islands, strengthening diplomatic ties in the Indo-Pacific.

New Delhi: Nagma Mohamed Mallick, a senior Indian Foreign Service officer, has been concurrently accredited as the next Ambassador of India to the Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced on Monday.
She will hold the additional charge while continuing in her current role as India’s Ambassador to Japan, with residence in Tokyo. Mallick is expected to assume her new assignment shortly.
Ms. Mallick is a 1991-batch officer of the Indian Foreign Service and has served in a wide range of diplomatic roles over her career spanning more than three decades. Her concurrent accreditation reflects India’s practice of strengthening diplomatic engagement with Pacific Island nations through non-resident ambassadors.

India has steadily enhanced its engagement with Pacific Island countries in recent years through multilateral platforms such as the Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC). The appointment is seen as part of India’s continued efforts to deepen political, developmental and people-to-people ties with the island nation.
As Ambassador to Japan, Ms. Mallick has been overseeing one of India’s most significant bilateral relationships, encompassing strategic, economic, technological and cultural cooperation. Her concurrent role is expected to further align India’s Indo-Pacific priorities with its diplomatic outreach to smaller island states.
India frequently appoints non-resident ambassadors to Pacific Island nations to ensure sustained diplomatic engagement while optimising diplomatic resources. Such appointments enable coordination on issues including climate change, disaster resilience, sustainable development and capacity building key concerns for island nations like the Marshall Islands.

The Republic of the Marshall Islands, a member of the United Nations, has been an important partner in multilateral forums, particularly on climate-related issues affecting small island developing states.
In her role as Ambassador to the Marshall Islands, Ms. Mallick will be responsible for representing India’s interests, strengthening bilateral relations and facilitating cooperation in areas such as development assistance, education, renewable energy and climate resilience.
The Ministry of External Affairs said she is expected to take up the assignment in the near future.
Ms. Mallick’s concurrent accreditation underlines India’s commitment to maintaining diplomatic engagement across regions while advancing its broader foreign policy objectives in the Indo-Pacific.
