New Delhi: India’s railways are undergoing a historic transformation, powered by over a decade of focused modernisation and technological advancement. Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that 35,000 kilometres of new railway tracks have been laid and 46,000 kilometres electrified in the last 11 years — a feat that reflects India’s accelerating journey toward a future-ready transport system.

Speaking at the International Railway Equipment Exhibition (IREE) in New Delhi, Vaishnaw credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership for this progress, saying, “In the last 11 years, our Prime Minister has put strong focus on railway modernisation, and the results are visible.”

The minister also shared that 40,000 new coaches have been manufactured, symbolising India’s growing strength in railway production and technology innovation.

Modern Train Fleet Lead the Way

Highlighting the progress of India’s bullet train project, Vaishnaw revealed that 325 kilometres of construction have been completed, with the first operational section between Surat and Mora expected to open by 2027.

He also emphasised the growing popularity of India’s new-generation trains — 156 Vande Bharat, 30 Amrit Bharat, and 4 Namo Bharat services — which are setting new benchmarks for passenger comfort and speed.

“These achievements are not just milestones; they showcase India’s vision to create a global standard in railway infrastructure,” Vaishnaw stated.

IREE 2025

India’s railway prowess will be on full display at the 16th International Railway Equipment Exhibition (IREE) 2025, scheduled from October 15–17 at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi. Jointly organised by the Railway Ministry and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), IREE is Asia’s largest railway equipment exhibition, attracting global participation.

This year’s edition will spotlight AI, IoT, and green technologies, along with youth-led innovations, and MSME participation under the Make in India initiative.

Dilip Kumar, Executive Director, Information and Publicity, Indian Railways, said, “Exhibitions like IREE highlight India’s innovation and manufacturing capabilities, helping our railway ecosystem compete on the global stage.”

Can railways achieve Net Zero Carbon Emissions by 2030?

Sitaram Sinku, Additional Member (Production Unit), Indian Railways, said the organisation is modernising everything — from rolling stock and station infrastructure to signals and telecommunications. Projects such as Gati Shakti Freight Corridors and world-class viaducts are also part of the transformation.

Sinku stressed that electrification and green technology adoption will help Indian Railways achieve Net Zero Carbon Emission by 2030. “The innovations at IREE 2025 prove that rail can drive economic growth while supporting sustainability,” he said.

Collaboration and Global Vision

B Thiagarajan, Chairman, CII Trade Fairs Council, described IREE 2025 as “a defining moment for Indian Railways” that aims to position India as a global benchmark in modernisation, sustainability, and smart mobility.

Echoing this sentiment, Puneet Kaura, Managing Director of Samtel Avionics Limited, said, “IREE 2025 represents the collaboration between industry and government — a testament to India’s momentum in transforming its railway infrastructure.”
