New Delhi: IndiGo has announced revised fuel surcharges on domestic and international flights, effective April 2, citing a sharp rise in aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices. The additional charges will range from ₹275 to ₹10,000, depending on the route and travel distance.

The move is expected to increase overall airfares for passengers across multiple sectors.

Impact on Domestic and International Travel

For domestic routes, the surcharge will vary between ₹275 and ₹950 based on flight distance. The airline said the revised structure is aimed at aligning costs more closely with route length while attempting to keep the burden on passengers relatively moderate.

On international routes, the charges will be significantly higher, ranging from ₹900 to ₹10,000. The airline noted that operating costs for overseas flights have surged sharply in recent weeks.

ATF Prices Drive Cost Increase

The revision follows a partial increase of about 25 per cent in ATF prices for domestic operations. According to the airline, fuel prices have more than doubled over the past month, particularly impacting long-haul and international services.

IndiGo said it has absorbed part of the increased cost but has passed on a portion to customers to maintain operational viability.

Earlier Surcharge Introduced in March

This is the second such revision within a short span. From March 14, the airline had already implemented fuel surcharges ranging between ₹425 and ₹2,300 for domestic and international flights, responding to rising fuel costs at the time.

The latest increase reflects continued volatility in fuel prices.

Global Factors Behind Price Surge

The surge in ATF prices has been linked to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, a key maritime route through which nearly 20 per cent of the world’s oil supply passes. Tensions in the region have led to delays and uncertainties in crude oil shipments.

Passengers to Bear Partial Burden

While acknowledging the financial strain on travellers, IndiGo stated that the revised surcharge does not fully reflect the extent of rising fuel costs. The airline indicated that it has limited the increase to reduce the impact on passengers.

With fuel prices remaining volatile, further adjustments in airfares may depend on global energy trends.
