CM Yadav reviewed the state government’s response with the Chief Secretary and other officials. He confirmed the directions issued, stating that the Indore Municipal Corporation Commissioner and Additional Commissioner were instructed to issue show-cause notices, the Additional Commissioner was removed, and the in-charge Superintending Engineer was relieved of duties. He also emphasized the need to immediately fill vacant positions in the Indore Municipal Corporation.
Prior to this, one official was terminated and two others suspended as the death toll rose. Shubham Shrivastava, in-charge sub-engineer of the PHE Department, was dismissed, while zonal officer Shaligram Sitole and assistant engineer Yogesh Joshi were suspended following the CM’s instructions.
Laboratory tests confirmed that the outbreak of vomiting and diarrhoea, which claimed 15 lives, was caused by contaminated drinking water. Dr. Madhav Prasad Hasani, Chief Medical and Health Officer (CMHO) of Indore, said the contamination stemmed from a leakage in the main water supply pipeline in Bhagirathpura. Officials noted that the leakage occurred near a police outpost under which a toilet had been constructed, leading to water contamination in the surrounding area.
This incident highlights serious lapses in Indore’s water supply system, raising concerns in a city that has been ranked India’s cleanest for the past eight years.
