New Delhi: The Central Government has approved the transfer of Justice Lisa Gill, currently a judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, to the Andhra Pradesh High Court, where she is expected to become the first woman Chief Justice in the court’s history.
The transfer was cleared following a recommendation made by the Supreme Court Collegium, the body responsible for judicial appointments and transfers in the higher judiciary. The proposal received formal approval from the President of India after consultation with the Chief Justice of India, in accordance with the constitutional procedure governing judicial transfers.
The development was also acknowledged by Arjun Ram Meghwal, Union Minister of State for Law and Justice, who extended his best wishes to Justice Gill for her new role.

Justice Gill’s transfer is linked to the Collegium’s earlier recommendation proposing her elevation as the next Chief Justice of the Andhra Pradesh High Court. She is expected to assume the position following the retirement of the current Chief Justice, Justice Dhiraj Singh Thakur, who is scheduled to step down in April.
In recent months, the Supreme Court Collegium has followed a practice of transferring judges who are likely to be elevated as Chief Justices of other High Courts before they formally assume office. This process allows the incoming judge to gain familiarity with the court’s functioning and administrative framework.
Justice Lisa Gill has been serving as a judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court since 2014. Over the years, she has dealt with a wide range of cases across multiple branches of law, earning recognition for her judicial expertise and balanced approach.
Her expected elevation will mark a significant milestone for the Andhra Pradesh High Court, as she will become the first woman to lead the institution. The move is also seen as part of broader efforts to promote greater representation of women in the higher judiciary.
Justice Gill will initially join the Andhra Pradesh High Court as a judge and is likely to assume charge as Chief Justice once the position becomes vacant later this year.
