New Delhi: India is going to celebrate its 79th Independence Day on 15 August 2025. On this occasion, the whole country is drenched in the pride of the tricolor. Our national flag not only symbolizes our independence, but it also represents our national pride and unity.

History and design of the tricolor

Our national flag in its current form was adopted by the Constituent Assembly on 22 July 1947. It was first hoisted on 15 August 1947 at the Red Fort. The tricolor has three equally proportioned stripes—saffron at the top, white in the middle, and green at the bottom. The length-width ratio of the flag is 3:2.

Importance of Chakra

In the middle of the white strip is the blue Ashoka Chakra, which has 24 spokes. This chakra is taken from the Ashoka Pillar of Sarnath, and it is a symbol of justice and dynamism. The diameter of the circle is equal to the width of the white stripe.

Significance of colors

Each color of the tricolor has its own special significance:

Saffron color: Symbolizes the strength and courage of the country

White color: Symbolizes peace and truth

Green color: Symbolizes fertility, growth, and prosperity of the land

Flag Code Rules

Since 26 January 2002, Indian citizens have been allowed to hoist the tricolor in their homes or institutions on any day. However, according to the flag code:

The tricolor must always be hoisted respectfully.

It must be hoisted only from sunrise to sunset.

It must never be allowed to touch the ground or water.

It must never be used as any decoration or clothing.

It must always be kept in a respectful position.

Significance of the tricolor

Our national flag is a symbol of our sovereignty and integrity. On the occasion of Independence Day, the whole country unites under the tricolor. It reminds us of the sacrifices of our freedom fighters and makes us realize our responsibilities towards the nation.

On this Independence Day, we all should pledge to maintain the honor and dignity of the tricolor. It is not only our duty but also a symbol of our national pride.
