Manipur: Rivers in spate as rains lash; Over 60,000 affected

Imphal: It has been raining continuously in Manipur for the last few days, which created a flood-like situation here. Over 60,000 people are affected by flood here and thousands of people are waiting for evacuation, reports Dynamite News correspondent.

Arambai Tengol and Assam Rifles, and Army personnel members took out thousands of people to a safe place on Tuesday.

The number of relief camps has reached 65 as and women, children, and the aged were given food and water.

Manipur’s Imphal East district has borne the major brunt of the flood as Imphal, Iril, Kongba, and Nambul rivers flowed at danger levels.

Assam Rifles Camps

Large number of Assam Rifles camps were opened with different groups working to send medical teams, food, and other essential items. At Wangkhei, Nongmeibung, Khurai, Heingang, and other places, Assam Rifles troops with boats were helping people reach safe places. The Assam Rifles helpline number was flooded with distress calls for food, water, and medicine.

A person is reported missing while over 50 people received injuries. About 11000 houses and about 48 infrastructures were damaged. Landslides were reported from over 93 places.

Emergency Teams

Emergency teams, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), state police, Army personnel, Red Cross, Arambai Tengol, and local volunteers with makeshift boats, were ferrying people, goods to the affected areas.

Rescue Workers Teams

Combined teams of rescue workers, since Sunday, evacuated patients, doctors, and equipment from JNIMS, braving heavy rainfall, strong water currents. Most of the vital institutions, including All India Radio, Raj Bhawan, offices, residences of MLAs, officials, have been flooded in Imphal East, Imphal West, Senapati, Thoubal, Bishnupur, and Kakching, Noney districts.

All the major rivers flowing in the state, Imphal, Nambul, Iril, Nambol,and Kongba are flowing at danger levels, inundating thousands of houses. The volunteers said they were short of rescue boats and emergency lamps. Power supply has been cut off in the flood-affected areas, and all families did not have emergency lamps, and even if they had, they could not charge them.

Over 10000 emergency lamps were required, which were not available. Most of the affected people were also not able to reach out for help as their mobiles and landlines were not working. Some climbed rooftops to wave flags seeking help.
