New Delhi: A tragic landslide in Mumbai’s Ghatkopar area has claimed two lives, while several others are feared trapped under debris after a portion of a hillside collapsed on a residential chawl early Wednesday morning.
Rescue operations are underway as multiple agencies continue efforts to locate and evacuate people trapped beneath the rubble.
According to officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Mumbai Fire Brigade, the incident took place around 3:48 am at Gaushiya Chawl in Chirag Nagar, Ghatkopar.
Initial information suggests that a section of a hillock gave way and collapsed onto two to three houses in the area. The sudden collapse caught residents off guard while they were asleep, leading to panic among local people.
Officials suspect that around four to five people may still be trapped under the debris. Search and rescue operations are being conducted on priority to locate survivors.
Teams from the Mumbai Fire Brigade, Mumbai Police and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed at the spot. Rescue personnel are removing debris and searching the affected houses.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Ganesh Shinde confirmed that two people have died in the incident. He said the exact number of trapped people is yet to be confirmed, but rescue teams are continuing operations.
The bodies of the deceased have been sent to the hospital for further procedures, while police officials have started necessary legal proceedings and investigation into the incident.
Two injured residents have been shifted to a hospital following the landslide. They have been identified as 18-year-old Sohel Ansari, who suffered a head injury, and 14-year-old Mohamad Ansari, who sustained a back injury.
Both injured victims are reported to be in stable condition. The incident has once again highlighted the vulnerability of Mumbai’s hillside settlements, especially during the monsoon season when heavy rainfall increases the risk of landslides and structural collapses.
