New Delhi: On Independence Day a startling incident occurred in National Capital Delhi. Reports state that a portion of the dome of Delhi's Humayun's Tomb has fallen. Ten to twelve people have been injured in the incident.

After learning about the incident police and locals hurried to the scene. Rescue operations have begun. It was previously reported that the incident happened behind Humayuns tomb. There is a shrine behind Humayun's tomb according to reports.

It is estimated that ten to twelve people are buried beneath the rubble. But a portion of Humayun's Tomb's dome has fallen. A portion of Humayun's tomb fell. Humayun's Tomb in the Nizamuddin neighborhood of Delhi partially collapsed on Friday. Eight to nine people are reportedly trapped according to officials.

A portion of the dome collapsed at approximately 4:30 pm, according to a Delhi Fire Service official. Five fire engines have been dispatched to the scene and the official stated that eight to nine people are believed to be trapped.

The monument is a tourist-frequented tomb from the middle of the 16th century. There have also been some recorded deaths. Police haven't verified it yet though.

About Humayun Tomb

The tomb of Humayun also known as Maqbara-i Humayun in Persian is where the Mughal Emperor Humayun is buried. Indias Delhi is where its situated. Humayuns first wife Empress Bega Begum constructed the tomb in 1558. Mirak Mirza Ghiyas and his son Sayyid Muhammad were the two Persian architects she selected to design it.

In India this was the first garden tomb. It is located in Delhis Nizamuddin East neighborhood close to the Old Fort (Purana Qila) which Humayun constructed in 1538. In addition the tomb is the first large structure in India to use red sandstone. Humayuns Tomb was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993.

It has subsequently undergone meticulous restoration and repairs. The path from the main entrance in the west leads to a number of smaller monuments close to the main tomb. One of these monuments is twenty years older than the main tomb. It is the tomb of Isa Khan Niazi a nobleman from Afghanistan who fought against the Mughals and served under Sher Shah Suri. In 1547 he had his tomb built.
