New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday held a telephone conversation with Iranian President Dr Masoud Pezeshkian to discuss the evolving situation in West Asia, reaffirming India's support for dialogue and diplomacy while emphasising the importance of regional peace and maritime security.
During the call, President Pezeshkian briefed the Prime Minister on the latest developments in the region. Modi welcomed the progress made in ongoing negotiations and expressed hope that continued diplomatic efforts would help ensure lasting peace and stability.
Prime Minister Modi reiterated India's long-standing position that all disputes should be resolved through peaceful dialogue and diplomacy. He welcomed the progress in negotiations involving Iran and stressed the need for sustained engagement to prevent further escalation in the region.
Sharing details of the conversation on X, the Prime Minister said he hoped the ongoing diplomatic efforts would lead to durable peace in West Asia.
A key focus of the discussion was the importance of safeguarding freedom of navigation and commerce, particularly through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's busiest maritime trade routes.
PM Modi underlined that uninterrupted movement through the strategic waterway is crucial not only for India but also for global trade and energy security.
The leaders also discussed the broader regional situation, with the Prime Minister emphasising the need for continued efforts to maintain peace and stability in West Asia.
The conversation comes amid renewed diplomatic engagement involving Tehran and Washington, with India continuing to advocate peaceful resolution of conflicts and the protection of international shipping routes critical to global commerce.
