New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday held a telephonic conversation with Tarique Rahman following his party’s decisive victory in Bangladesh’s parliamentary elections.

In a post on X, PM Modi expressed delight at speaking with Rahman and congratulated him on what he described as a “remarkable victory” in the national polls. The Prime Minister conveyed his best wishes and extended support to Rahman as he prepares to take on the responsibility of leading the country.

BNP Secures Clear Majority

Rahman’s party, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, secured an overwhelming majority in the elections, crossing the 151-seat threshold required to form the government. While the Election Commission is yet to formally announce the final results, media tallies indicate that the BNP is comfortably positioned to assume power.

The elections were seen as a turning point in Bangladesh’s political landscape, especially after the collapse of the previous Awami League government and the interim administration led by Muhammad Yunus. With Sheikh Hasina no longer in the political fray, the contest largely narrowed to the BNP and other opposition forces.

Strengthening Bilateral Ties

In his message, PM Modi emphasized the deep-rooted historical and cultural ties between India and Bangladesh. He reaffirmed India’s continued commitment to supporting peace, progress, and prosperity for both nations.

“As two close neighbours with deep-rooted historical and cultural ties, I reaffirmed India’s continued commitment to the peace, progress, and prosperity of both our peoples,” the Prime Minister stated.

His remarks signal New Delhi’s intent to maintain stability and strong diplomatic engagement with the new leadership in Dhaka. India has consistently advocated for a democratic, inclusive, and progressive Bangladesh, and Modi reiterated this stance in his congratulatory outreach.

A New Chapter in Bangladesh Politics

Tarique Rahman’s return to Bangladesh in December after more than 17 years in self-exile marked a significant political development. With the BNP poised to form the next government, Rahman is expected to lead the country into a new political phase.

Notably, Rahman has urged party workers to avoid celebratory rallies and instead hold special prayers nationwide — a move seen as an effort to promote unity and restraint during a sensitive political transition.

Regional Implications

The outcome of the elections holds importance not just for Bangladesh but for the broader South Asian region. India’s swift outreach underscores the strategic and diplomatic value both nations place on maintaining stable and cooperative relations.

As the new government takes shape, all eyes will be on how India and Bangladesh deepen their multifaceted partnership in trade, security, connectivity, and development initiatives.
