New Delhi: US President Donald Trump recently described Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a "good friend" and a "great prime minister." He said that there is a special and deep relationship between India and the US. Trump also admitted that sometimes there may be tensions or differences, but the relationship between the two countries always remains strong.

Reacting to this, Prime Minister Modi wrote on the social media platform Twitter that he appreciates Trump's positive thinking and evaluation of the relationship and fully supports it.

Why did India-US relations deteriorate?

The biggest problem between the two countries in recent times has been the tariff dispute. The US imposed a tariff (import duty) of up to 50% on imported goods coming from India. In August itself, the Trump administration had imposed a 25% tariff. Apart from this, an additional 25% duty was also imposed on India for buying oil from Russia.

These decisions soured the trade relations between the two countries. However, this tension is mainly at the economic level, while at the strategic and diplomatic level, both still remain partners.

Strategic partnership and cooperation

Prime Minister Modi believes that the relationship between India and America is not limited to just trade, but it is a comprehensive global partnership.

  • Cooperation in the defense sector
  • Partnership in technology and innovation
  • Mutual understanding in the energy sector
  • Working together in the Indo-Pacific region

These are the areas through which the relationship between the two countries is constantly getting stronger. That is why, despite the trade tension, both the leaders are giving importance to personal relationships.

Balance of friendship and tension

The relationship between India and America has never completely deteriorated. Yes, there have been differences on trade or policies, but at a larger level, both are important partners for each other.

“PM Modi is my good friend and remain so,” says Donald Trump

  • Both countries cooperate in security matters.
  • Partner in the fight against terrorism.
  • The role of both is important in maintaining the balance of power in the Asia-Pacific region.

That is, sometimes there is tension in the relationship, and sometimes friendship prevails. Overall, the relationship between India and America rests on a balance between friendship and tension.
