New Delhi: Russian President Vladimir Putin began the second day of his India visit with a solemn tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat where he penned a heartfelt message in the visitors book. In his note written in Russian he described Gandhi as the founder of modern independent India a humanist and an enduring freedom fighter whose ideals continue to guide the world.

Putin wrote that Gandhis philosophy of nonviolence and truth had played an invaluable role in advancing global peace. He added that Gandhis influence remains deeply relevant for contemporary international challenges. According to the Russian leader Gandhi pointed humanity towards a fairer and more balanced global order that many nations including India and Russia continue to pursue today.

He also remarked that India upholds the principles of equality mutual respect and cooperation on the world stage and said that Russia stands firmly committed to the same ideals.

"Mahatma Gandhi made an invaluable contribution to the cause of peace on our planet through non-violence and truth, the influence of which remains relevant to this day. Mahatma Gandhi showed the path toward a new, fairer, multipolar world order that is now in the process of being formed. In his teachings on equality, mutual respect, and cooperation, India today - together with the people of the world, defends these very principles and values on the international stage," Putin wrote in Russian.

A WARM WELCOME AND A SYMBOLIC RIDE

Putins arrival in New Delhi on Thursday evening set a warm tone when Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally received him at the airport. The two leaders greeted each other with a friendly hug and handshake before making an unusual protocol breaking choice. They travelled together in a Toyota Fortuner that is part of a modern VIP transport fleet used for foreign dignitaries. Their shared ride to the Prime Ministers residence signaled the continued closeness of the bilateral relationship.

MILITARY HONOURS AND HIGH STAKES DIPLOMACY

On Friday morning Putin received a tri services guard of honour at Rashtrapati Bhavan in the presence of President Droupadi Murmu. Senior officials including External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan were also present at the ceremony.

Later at Hyderabad House Putin and Modi held the twenty third India Russia Annual Summit. The discussions covered defence cooperation expanding energy ties and creating streamlined pathways for the mobility of skilled workers between the two countries. The leaders also addressed one of the most pressing global issues the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Putin said that Russia is working toward a peaceful settlement and has shared the details of its proposal with India. Modi reiterated that India remains a champion of peace and believes that dialogue and diplomacy must guide any lasting resolution.

A STRATEGIC VISIT AMID GLOBAL REALIGNMENTS

Putins visit comes at a time when New Delhi is simultaneously engaged in trade discussions with the United States regarding tariff related issues linked to its Russian oil imports. The Russian President is expected to meet Indian business leaders and will attend a state banquet hosted by President Murmu before concluding his visit.
