Sushma Swaraj’s Husband, Senior Advocate Swaraj Kaushal Dies
New Delhi: This morning, the nation lost a highly respected, serious, and honest administrator. Swaraj Kaushal, husband of Sushma Swaraj and father of BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj, a senior advocate and former Governor of Mizoram, passed away at the age of 73. His death was confirmed by the Delhi BJP, which stated that the last rites would be performed at 4:30 PM today at the Lodhi Road crematorium. His deep understanding of politics, the judiciary, and public life, along with his sharp intellect, set him apart. His passing is considered a great loss for the country.
Swaraj Kaushal was often known as Sushma Swaraj's husband, but his political and legal stature was far greater. He was a senior advocate of the Supreme Court, a former Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha, and a skilled administrator. His clean image, sharp mind, and strategic thinking earned him a distinct identity at the national level. This is a great personal and professional loss for Bansuri Swaraj, as he was not only her father but also her political and legal mentor.

Swaraj Kaushal achieved milestones in his life that very few people attain. In 1990, he was appointed Governor of Mizoram at the young age of 37. He became one of the youngest governors in India and served in that position from 1990 to 1993. Later, from 1998 to 2004, he was a Rajya Sabha MP from Haryana and made a distinct mark in Parliament due to his outspokenness and legal expertise. He argued several high-profile cases in the Supreme Court.
Swaraj Kaushal's role in establishing peace in Northeast India was extremely significant. He was a key figure in the historic Mizo Peace Accord. When Mizoram was engulfed in insurgency and violence, he initiated a dialogue process with the underground leader Laldenga. His diplomacy and patient negotiations brought an end to the decades-long insurgency. She is still remembered today as a 'peacemaker' for this effort.
The love story of Sushma Swaraj and Swaraj Kaushal is just as fascinating as their political journey. During the Emergency in 1975, both young lawyers were part of George Fernandes' legal team, where they met, became friends, and then fell in love. Their ideologies were different, but their hearts connected. Setting aside family and political differences, they married on July 13, 1975. Jayaprakash Narayan himself blessed them. Sushma ji always maintained that her husband played an inspiring role in her success.
