New Delhi: The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is going to begin the process of updating children's Aadhaar cards through schools across the country. This will happen in stages over the next two months, reports Dynamite News correspondent.

Bhuvanesh Kumar Statement

UIDAI CEO Bhuvanesh Kumar said that more than 7 crore children who are above the age of five have not yet updated their biometric data, which is required.

Why Biometric Update Needed?

  • It is compulsory to update their fingerprint and iris scan in the Aadhaar card after child turns five.
  • If the mandatory biometric update (MBU) is not done on time, the child's Aadhaar number might be deactivated.

UIDAI Rules

  • Biometric update between the ages of five and seven is free.
  • After seven years, a fee of ₹100 is required for the update.

How Schools Perform Biometric Update?

UIDAI is launching a new project where schools will be used to update biometric data of children. Parents' consent is needed for this so that children can get the service at their school easily. Under this project, biometric machines will be sent to every district and will move from one school to another to reach more children.

The technology is currently being tested and the plan will be rolled out in stages over the next 45 to 60 days. In the future, UIDAI also plans to update biometric data again for children after they turn 15 through schools and colleges.

Right now, Aadhaar is created for children under five without biometric data. But after they turn five, it becomes necessary to update their biometric details.

Why Is Biometric Data Important?

It is very important to update children's biometric data on time because it is linked to various government and private services.
With an updated Aadhaar, children can easily get benefits like school admission, scholarships, entrance exams, and other government schemes such as DBT (Direct Benefit Transfer).

"We want children to receive all government benefits on time, and using schools is the easiest and most effective way to do this," UIDAI said. "Accurate biometric data ensures that children are not left out of any government scheme. "
