New Delhi: Stand-up comedian Pranit More has publicly apologised following the controversy surrounding a viral clip from one of his comedy shows that featured the now widely discussed 'Rs 370 biryani' remark.
In a video shared on Instagram, More acknowledged the criticism directed at him and admitted that he had made a significant error in judgment by allowing derogatory comments to be made on stage without intervening.
Addressing the backlash, More said he understood why people were upset and believed the criticism against him was justified.
"You may have seen the video for which I have been receiving a lot of criticism, and I believe I deserve it," he said in the video.
The comedian admitted that several offensive remarks were made during the performance and acknowledged that he failed to stop them at the time.
Explaining the circumstances, More said the atmosphere in the venue influenced his reaction.
"At the time, everyone around was laughing, and I got carried away. It was a lapse in judgement on my part, and I believe it was a serious mistake," he stated.
The comedian conceded that he should have intervened immediately rather than allowing the remarks to continue.
The controversy erupted after a clip from More's show circulated widely on social media, drawing criticism from users who described some of the comments as insensitive and derogatory.
The video triggered a debate online about the boundaries of comedy and the responsibility of performers when dealing with potentially offensive content.
In his apology, More sought to address concerns raised by viewers and accepted accountability for his actions during the show.
His statement has since generated mixed reactions, with some users appreciating the apology while others have called for greater sensitivity and responsibility from public performers.
The incident has reignited discussions about freedom of expression in comedy, audience influence, and the responsibility of comedians to ensure that humour does not cross into offensive or harmful territory.
As the debate continues online, More's apology marks his first public response to the controversy surrounding the viral remark.
